Microwave and millimeter (mm) wave applications such as short range communications at 24GHz and 60GHz and automotive radar at 24GHz and 77GHz are on the vanguard of the new generation of high-frequency wideband integrated circuits applications that will gradually dominate this decade. Multiple-antenna phased-array systems are capable of steering the radiation beam by electronic means, emulating the behavior of a directional antenna. This talk is dedicated to present various techniques to implement microwave and millimeter wave integrated phased-array transceivers in silicon-based technologies in the context of three design examples: A 24-GHz 0.18-um CMOS front-end, a fully integrated 8-element 24-GHz SiGe phased array receiver, and a 77-GHz fully-integrated SiGe phased array transceiver. These works were done at the Caltech High-Speed Integrated Circuits Group.


Dr. Xiang Guan received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University in 1996, the M.E. degree from National University of Singapore in 2000, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, USA in 2005. From 1996-1997, he was a visiting researcher in the Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon, Portugal, where he was involved in the development of a data-acquisition chip for electrocardiogram remote monitoring device. Since January 2006, he has been with SiBEAM Inc, Sunnyvale, CA, where he is doing R&D in low-power high performance CMOS mm-wave circuits design.

Dr. Guan was a co-recipient of 2004 Best Paper Awards of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. He was a co-recipient of the Grand Prize in the Stanford Innovators Challenge in 2006. He also received the Schlumberger Fellowship in 2000 and the Analog Devices Outstanding Student Designer Award in 2002. He is author and co-author of about 15 papers and reviewer in various IEEE transactions.
