Summary: (1)      The objective of this presentation is to report on progress made in the time domain modeling of electromagnetic fields and waves. After a short retrospective of electromagnetic field modeling, the key concepts of time domain modeling will be revisited, and it will be shown how they translate into the special properties of time domain simulators as engineering tools for high-frequency, signal integrity and EMC work Comparisons between frequency-domain and time-domain modeling approaches will highlight the respective strengths and weaknesses of these methods. Some of the advanced features of time domain tools will be demonstrated live during the presentation.

              (2) The physics of electromagnetic wave propagation in metamaterials have been hotly debated, and misconceptions based on steady-state considerations have confused the issues for several years. A much clearer picture emerges when wave propagation in metamaterials is studied in the time domain where causality and energy conservation are obvious. We will discuss and demonstrate the phenomena of negative phase velocity, negative refraction, plasmon formation, and superfocussing. We will demonstrate these phenomena using computer animations, and propose a number of exotic engineering applications of metamaterials, such as planar lenses, cloaking and non-radiating wireless interconnects.

Biography:  Wolfgang J. R. Hoefer received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technische Hochschule Aachen, Germany, in 1965, and the D. Ing. degree from the Université de Grenoble, France, in 1968. He holds an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing. h.c.) from the Technische Universität München since 2007.

From 1968 to 1969, he was a Lecturer at the Institut Universitaire de Technologie de Grenoble and a Research Fellow at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France. In 1969 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he was a Professor until March 1992. In April 1992 he was selected to hold the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in RF Engineering at the University of Victoria, Canada. He headed the Computational Electromagnetic Research Laboratory (CERL) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Victoria until his retirement in 2006. He held visiting appointments with the Space Division of AEG-Telefunken in Backnang, Germany, the Electromagnetics Laboratory of the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France, the Space Electronics Directorate of the Communications Research Centre in Ottawa, Canada, the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Italy, the University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis, France, The Ferdinand Braun Institute in Berlin and the Technical University of Munich, both in Germany, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, the University of Perugia, Italy, the ETHZ in Zürich, Switzerland, and the Institute of High Performance Computing in Singapore.

His research interests include computational electromagnetics, metamaterials, computer-aided design of microwave and millimeter wave circuits, microwave measurement techniques, and engineering education. He is the co-founder and managing editor of the International Journal of Numerical Modelling since 1988. He serves on the editorial and advisory boards of several other scientific journals and organizations. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Royal Society (the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences) of Canada and of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He was a distinguished Microwave Lecturer of the MTT Society (2005 to 2007), and is the recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Educator Award of the IEEE MTT Society and the 2009 McNaughton Gold Medal of IEEE Canada. He is the President of Faustus Scientific Corporation.
